Chapter 22
On-time Delivery VS Working Over-time
On-time delivery to customer is the very basic requirements by any customers, people know that very well, but the thing is how are you doing to guarantee it? Can working with OT (over-time) make it happen??
Many companies many people they like working with OT to show that they are working hard and they are very proud of it. And they even tell customers that how hard they are working everyday to serve the customers …
Is that true? Is that reasonable?
When we were doing consultancy to a Hong Kong based company in Dongguang Guang Dong area several years ago, we agreed with General Manager there that we would start the kick off meeting at 9:00am that day. We were there in their meeting room at about 8:50am that day, only several people were there from customer side, then we had been waiting for people especially for that GM, who finally went there at about 9:30am. He was walking very fast with a group of people into the meeting room with a call was still on going. After about another 5 minutes, he finished that call and said sorry! Sorry! Yesterday night we had been working until midnight and then we had the urgent meeting this morning to prepare the customer’s visit and sorry sorry ……. We are late!
We had been looking at his performance finally we said you had been already late but then you wasted another 10 minutes to explain your excuses … if we are your customer, how come we can believe you can guarantee on-time delivery to us? Yes, you are busy, but you even can not guarantee on-time deliver yourself to meetings! How come you can on-time deliver products to us?? That must be a question mark! Because at least you did not deliver respect on time to your partner!
Why people “like” working with OT?
- People are not qualified to their job
Suppose your job is designed to a right people to fill up, but fortunately or unfortunately you got that job. But because you are not qualified with certain capability to fulfill that job, you have to work with OT.
This is quite bad not only to yourself but also to the company – because of your worse capability, you are delaying the things that you should have finished within 8 hours, but you could not until midnight. Your normal life with your family is destroyed, and the company’s business is jeopardized also because of your low efficiency.
- People wants to show they are hard worker
If you are a leader and you like working with over time, it is a disaster to the employer that you are working for, because people under you need to show that they are similar with you – they like OT and they are working hard, otherwise they think they will be liked by you and may lose their job although maybe most of them they actually do not like this style. Then the whole culture in your organization will be a OT culture, people will never do anything during the day time, and just awaiting the OT time to show their performance to you. Then little by little, people under you will be interested in shifting responsibility back and forth among the whole organization, they will not do anything and just kick the balls around because anyway they can not leave the office on time same as the others, they need to work until midnight to make sure their boss see that, know that and like that … this is a huge waste to the company, efficiency is gone, morale is gone, extra electricity is gone, water is gone … people are exhausted, even machines are running out of spec …
- People do not know planning
Many people do not know how to plan their jobs for one day one week one month … they are busy every minute without doing anything … every time you call them, they will tell you I am busy on what what …with never ended meetings. What they are doing? When you are having the meeting, they are reading e-mails or on calls; after you finish the meeting, they are going to another meeting for continuous reading mails / calls … they never stop until both themselves and the company go to die.
How come they can guarantee the On-time delivery to customers??
